1 Nephi 2

In a dream, Lehi is told to leave Jerusalem in order to save his life. He leaves with only his family and provisions (verse 5)--the important things: the latter for physical survival, the former for spiritual survival.

Lehi's two oldest sons, Laman & Lemuel begin murmuring against Lehi. We get the following reasons:

  • Lehi was a visionary man - the way the passage (verse 11) reads to me implies this in isolation: that is, it's simply because Lehi saw visions that Laman & Lemuel are upset.
  • Lehi led them from Jerusalem, leaving their inheritance behind. Simple greed. (verse 11)
  • Thought Lehi was following "the foolish imaginations of his heart." (verse 11)
  • They knew not the dealings of God. The underlying cause of all the others?(verse 12)
  • They think Jerusalem couldn't be destroyed. Not wouldn't. (verse 13)

In verse 16, Nephi crys unto the Lord in order to know the mysteries God. He believed whereas Laman & Lemuel did not. Nephi asked for, and got, a confirmation of the Prophet's (Lehi) words.
